PALAHIA (PAULINE) NYKOLYSZYN (nee KORYNIWSKA) Peacefully, on July 22, 2009 at the age of 86, Palahia passed away, with family by her side at the Holy Family Home. Predeceased by her husband Mykola in 1998, Palahia will be lovingly remembered by her son, Walter; daughter, Anne Zakaluzny (Michael); grandchildren, Kathleen (Craig), Nicoline and Matthew; and numerous close relatives and friends. Palahia was born on March 8, 1923 in Ukraine. She married Mykola in August 1951 in England and together they immigrated to Winnipeg in 1952. Palahia was a faithful member of St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church and a 40 year member of the UCWLC. She enjoyed singing in the Parish Choir and volunteering her time to church perogy bees and other events. Palahia was a very kind, generous woman with a great sense of humour who devoted her life to taking care of her family. She particularly enjoyed spending her time gardening, cooking terrific Ukrainian meals, which she loved to share with her family and friends, and pursuing her artistic talent for creating embroidered artwork. Palahia had a special fondness for her grandchildren and would spend countless hours with them. The family wishes to express our sincere gratitude to the staff and Sisters of Holy Family Home for the care and compassion given to Palahia. You are all very special caring people who looked after our Mom and Baba over the last eight months. We would also like to thank relatives and friends who provided support during Palahia's last days. Prayers will be sung 7:00 p.m. Thursday, (tonight) July 23 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 24 at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave. with a Redemptorist Father officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Palahia's memory to Holy Family Home, 165 Aberdeen Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2W 1T9. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Hi WALTER & ANNE: My Mom always spoke very highly of your Mom and always reminiced about the time that she thought that she recogonized your Mom at a store in Winnipeg after they both hadn't seen each other for years after coming to Canada from England. My Mom said your Mom's name very quietly in Palahia's hearing range hoping that your Mom would respond and turn around to see who mentioned her name...if my Mom's haunch was actually true. Well, it was. It was a wonderful reunion. They found out that they lived in the same neighbourhood. We were on Church Street and you were on Cathedral Avenue if I recall correctly. As a result, I had a chance to meet you and your sister Anne and those memories have always stayed with me. The reason that these condolences are belated is because I just found out today that your Mom, Palahia passed away several years ago. My Mom will be very sad when I pass on the unfortunate news to her tomorrow. You are welcome to contact me at: makingsnowangels@shaw.ca if you wish. If I don't hear from you, on behalf of my family and myself, I would like to take this opportunity to express our belated condolences and wish you all the best for the future. B.
